Indigenous Patient Liaison (Northern Health Area)

Provided by Carrier Sekani Family Services

Provide Indigenous patients' and their families with resources to cope with the stresses of a family member having to leave their home and community to come to the Prince George hospital.
The Indigenous Patient Liaison Worker (IPLW) serves as a connection between communities and the hospital healthcare staff to help facilitate healing. The worker also assists Indigenous patients with accessing additional services outside of the UHNBC as needed. The IPLW works in many areas throughout the hospital such as the ICU, pediatrics, maternity, primary care medical unit and more. Services offered include:
  • In-hospital support
  • Additional information on health services available in Prince George and the surrounding community.
  • Translation between Carrier dialects and English; if the dialect is not spoken on site, someone who speaks it will be arranged.
  • Help with applying for health care travel benefits to cover the cost of travel, hotels, food, and transport.
  • General information about the hospital stay and assistance with completing forms.
Referral Process: Simply contact your Aboriginal Patient Liaison Worker (APLW), Community Health Representative (CHR), Nurse or Social Worker and they can connect you with the In-Hospital Support. Patients being transferred to another hospital should inform their Indigenous Patient Liaison Worker so the receiving hospital can be notified and prepared for their arrival.
