Child and Youth Services - Domestic Violence and Abuse Support

Provided by Tri-City Transitions Society

Provides counselling and support programs for children and youth who have experienced or been exposed to family violence and abuse. Services aim to address the impacts of trauma and support healing, safety, and well-being.
Programs Include:
The Peace Program:The Prevention, Education, Advocacy, Counselling, and Empowerment (PEACE) program is dedicated to supporting children and youth across British Columbia who have experienced domestic violence. Formerly known as Children Who Witness Abuse, this free, confidential service provides a safe and supportive environment for children and youth ages 3 to 18. The PEACE program offers a compassionate space where children and youth can learn that they are not alone, that violence is never their fault, and that they have the power to heal, grow, and thrive. At Tri-City Transitions, we are here to support them every step of the way.

Individual PEACE Counselling (1:1 Sessions): Individualized, one-on-one PEACE psycho-educational counselling sessions are provided for children and youth aged 3 to 18. These 45-minute sessions are tailored to meet the unique needs of each participant and incorporate developmentally appropriate, play-based and expressive activities. Each child or youth can receive up to 8-12 sessions, either online or in-person, and each session is tailored to their individual needs.

The focus of these sessions includes:

  • Healthy Emotional Expression: Supporting children and youth in developing healthy ways to express anger and other intense emotions.
  • Safety Planning: Assisting participants in identifying personal safety networks and creating actionable safety plans.
  • Conflict Resolution Skills: Supporting the development of non-violent conflict resolution strategies for everyday situations.
  • Positive Self-Concept and Self-Esteem: Encouraging a strong sense of self-worth and confidence to support healing and growth.
  • Psycho-Education: Providing education on the impacts of violence, healthy relationships, and emotional well-being.

Parenting support is offered for non-offending parents who have their children registered in the PEACE program. These psycho-educational support sessions help parents strengthen their attachment to their children, providing them with tools and strategies to foster a supportive and nurturing environment for their children’s healing.

PEACE CORE Groups: Support the development of relationships between children and their guardian(s) through a 6-week program that includes both group and individual sessions. Participants build knowledge and skills while learning to access their internal strengths and resources.

Youth Group:The Youth PEACE CORE group is designed for youth aged 13 to 18. Participation in a peer group setting supports youth in building confidence, developing self-advocacy skills, and finding their voice in a safe and supportive environment. This is a closed group for youth. Participants aged 14 and older may attend without guardian consent. The group is intended for youth who have witnessed domestic violence or have been exposed to conflict, providing a safe space for support and connection.

Guardians Group: Guardians of youth enrolled in the Youth PEACE CORE group may participate in a parallel program. Participation in the PEACE CORE group can help address feelings of isolation while fostering connection with others in the community. Throughout the group, participants are introduced to concepts and strategies that support them in drawing on their own strengths and resources as they navigate challenges affecting themselves and their families.

During this 6-week CORE group, participants are introduced to:

  • Different types of abuse and their developmental impacts
  • Identifying and expressing feelings
  • Problem-solving and conflict resolution
  • Developing confidence and self-esteem
  • Ways to stay safe and access resources, including creating a personal first-aid kit

Violence Is Preventable (VIP) School-Based Intervention And Education Program The Violence is Preventable program is a school based education program designed to help grade 8 students better understand the dynamics of healthy vs. unhealthy relationships, how to make healthy choices (partners and behaviours) and how to support friends that may be in an abusive relationship. This program is offered as a series of workshops and can be tailored to meet an individual school’s needs.
