A 24-hour emergency shelter in Surrey with 14 beds for single women who are homeless. Operates from a harm-reduction perspective. Offers help in finding housing and life skills, as well as referrals. Not wheelchair accessible.
Firth Residence:
Located in Abbotsford, provides transitional housing and support services for women on their own or with children, and detox and 30-day stabilization for women aged 19 and over. Clients receive case management and help in developing long-term housing plans and accessing community resources. Provides 20 furnished rooms with a private entrance, and one suite for a family. Low barrier; abstinence-based program. Applicants must aim to work towards independence and securing long term housing, be eligible for income assistance or have another source of income, and be able to live semi-independently with minimal support. The facility is staffed 24 hours a day. Accepts self-referrals.
Pathways Housing:
Second-stage transitional housing located in New Westminster for women ages 19 and over. Provides nine apartment suites; three of which are reserved for community work release, the remaining six suites have shared washroom facilities and are used as second stage housing. Support staff is available on-site 24 hours daily. The maximum length of stay is 18 months. Priority is given for women completing community residential programs who need second-stage housing to support their transition to independent community living. Depending on space availability, they may accept community and self-referrals. Applicants must have been stable in their alcohol and drug/mental health recovery for at least six months, and be linked with an alcohol and drug or mental health support team in order to maintain recovery. Rent is $400 per month; damage deposit is required.
Elizabeth Gurney House (aka Liz Gurney's):
Located in New Westminster, provides 24-hour safe shelter for single women and women with children who are homeless and without resources. Provides meals, basic necessities, laundry facilities, crisis intervention, children's programming, and community liaison support. Capacity is 12 beds; families are housed in one room and singles their own room. Operates from a harm-reduction perspective. No substance use on the premises and all medication must be turned over to staff. Referral by self or community members. A phone assessment is done prior to acceptance. Not wheelchair accessible.
Sheena’s Place:
Offers a safe, supportive environment for families without resources. In a home-like setting, the shelter provides daily necessities, crisis intervention, addiction and debt counseling, and support in accessing low income housing.
